Considering Solaris

Solaris, dir. Andrei Tarkovsky (1972), Solaris dir. Steven Soderbergh (2002)

In 1968 Stanley Kubrick directed the epic sci-fi film, 2001: A Space Odyssey, based on a short story by the very forward-thinking Arthur C. Clarke.  It’s filmmaking on a grand scale, using the backdrop of space to wax poetic about what it means to be human when the most human of characters is a computer, whether there is intelligent life elsewhere in the universe, as well as the origin of the universe as a whole.
